The Miami Marlins got another big bat on Saturday by inking OF Jorge Soler to a three-year $36 million dollar contract. Miami's move comes at a crucial point as they look to compete in the National League East. The Phillies recently signed Nick Castellanos and the Braves added bullpen help in Kenley Jansen earlier this week. Miami needed to add some help and Soler fits the bill.

The Marlins have high expectations entering the 2022 campaign. They have a highly impressive young pitching staff that features the likes of Sandy Alcantara, Trevor Rogers, Pablo Lopez and more. Their starting rotation has the potential to be a top ten staff in the league without question.

But the Marlins' main question marks stemmed from an offensive perspective.

Heading into the offseason, their standout players in the lineup were Jesus Aguilar, Miguel Rojas, and Jazz Chisholm. Although each of those players are talented, Miami needed to add offensive depth if they had any realistic shot at competing in the NL East. The addition of utility infielder Joey Wendle was an important one early in the offseason. Their big move prior to the lockout was signing Avisail Garcia. But the lineup still lacked the necessary depth to keep pace with the Mets, Braves, and Phillies.

However, the Marlins finally added the vital impact bat they were looking for with Soler. He is someone who smashed 48 home runs to lead the American League back in 2019, and played a crucial role for the Braves in the World Series in 2021 en route to being selected as World Series MVP. His presence in the Marlins lineup alongside the aforementioned hitters will provide the Marlins with an opportunity to be competitive this season.
