This season's Slam Dunk Contest will be held on Saturday, Feb. 17, inside the Staples Center. While the event's participants have yet to be released, Dallas Mavericks guard Dennis Smith Jr. says he'd like to be considered.

Smith, a 20-year-old rookie high-flyer, commented on this possibility following Tuesday's shootaround at the Pepsi Center.

“That’s something I’d like to do,” Smith said. “If I’m given the opportunity, I’m definitely willing to do it. That’s the event that I watched a lot growing up, and it’s probably the most exciting event of the All-Star weekend, except the actual game.”

“I don’t know when it happens,” Smith said, adding that he has not heard anything yet about the possibility of being in the event. “But it feels like I should be given the opportunity. It’s not my decision, though.”

Smith should certainly be considered for this season's Dunk Contest. In his 37 games played for the Mavs this season, the former No. 9 overall pick has turned in averages of 14.5 points on 40.3 percent shooting from the field (32.7 percent from beyond the arc), 4.5 assists, and 3.9 rebounds.

Smith and the Mavs, winners in five of their last ten games, will be back in action on Saturday night, as they're scheduled for a matchup in Portland against the Trail Blazers.
