Monday is going to be the legendary Kobe Bryant’s day, as the ex-Los Angeles Lakers guard is set to see both his jersey numbers retired in Staples Center later tonight. Thousands of miles away, however, another legendary scorer appeared to have partly stolen the thunder from Kobe.

That’s Dallas Mavericks power forward Dirk Nowitzki, who passed Bryant for 13th place on the all-time NBA 3-pointers made list with a trey right out of the game in Monday’s matchup against the Phoenix Suns.

Dirk Nowitzki entered the Suns game tied with Kobe Bryant for 13th on the said list with 1,827 triples, and would end the day as the sole owner of that spot. Depending on how well his stroke is going to be for the rest of the contest, Nowitzki could even surpass Chauncey Billups for 12th all-time today. The former Detroit Pistons guard finished his career with 1,830 3-pointers.

Nowitzki, 39, is shooting well from beyond the arc this season, connecting on 42.7 percent of his shots from deep, knocking down 1.6 of 3.7 attempts per game from downtown.

Assuming Dirk Nowitzki plays next season, he’s going to have a better shot of getting inside the top 10 of the list. Utah Jazz guard Joe Johnson currently holds that spot with 1,940, while former Mavs guard Jason Kidd is ninth with 1,988.
