The Dallas Mavericks could be getting back one of their star players very soon. Dirk Nowitzki is getting close to a return, per Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle, and he could return this month if things go well.

Nowitzki has been out due to ankle surgery back in April, plus a setback in training camp that has kept him out longer than expected. Despite Nowitzki's absence, the Mavs are off to a decent start thanks in large part to stud rookie Luka Doncic. The Mavs are 7-9 on the season, which is two games back of the eighth-seeded Los Angeles Lakers.

While Nowitzki is nearing the end of the line of a Hall of Fame career, he should provide a boost off the bench when healthy and will be a crucial leader to help the Mavs' young players, especially Doncic. Last year, Dirk averaged 12.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. He shot 45.6 percent from the field and 40.9 percent from 3.

The sooner Dirk Nowitzki comes back into the fold, the sooner the team can jell and gain chemistry amongst each other. The Mavs may not be a legitimate contender this season, but they could battle for the postseason if they continue to improve.
