Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki is hoping new Mavs franchise player Luka Doncic follows in his footsteps and spends his entire NBA career in Dallas.

Like pretty much every basketball fan out there, Nowitzki is having a lot of fun watching Doncic and the Mavs play this season.

“At 20, it has been a lot of fun watching him play. I hope he stays in Dallas his entire career. I hope I can continue having a good time watching him play for a long time,” Nowitzki said during the Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony held in Berlin, per Euro Hoops.

“Luka is very young. I hope he’s able to build something and play at a very high level. I hope one day he can bring a championship home.”

In 44 games for the Mavs this season, Doncic is averaging 28.9 points, 9.5 rebounds and 8.7 assists. He’s shooting 46.5 percent from the field, 32.3 percent from beyond the arc and 76.5 percent from the free-throw line.

The Mavs are 33-22 on the season and are in sixth place in the Western Conference standings.

Luka Doncic has taken the NBA world by storm, similar to how LeBron James did when he was a youngster with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The reigning Rookie of the Year said last season he was surprised how well he played during his rookie campaign, and now he is an MVP candidate and the new face of the Mavs franchise in the post-Dirk Nowitzki era.

Derrick Rose is the youngest MVP in NBA history. He won the award during the 2010-11 season with the Chicago Bulls at the age of 22. Doncic turns 21 this month, and it will be fascinating to see if Luka can break Rose’s record this season or in 2020-21.
