The Dallas Mavericks let a big win slip away against the Boston Celtics. Up by as many as 13 points in the fourth quarter, the Mavs squandered their chance to score one of the biggest upsets of the season as they eventually lost to the Celtics in overtime.

After the game, Mavs star Dirk Nowitzki was complimentary of Kyrie Irving, whose 47 points were instrumental in the Celtics’ comeback, but still admitted that his team basically blew it.

Per Earl K. Sneed of Mavs.com:

“[Irving] is a good player, but we had our chances. Sometimes good players are on. We tried all sorts of stuff on him. We tried to trap him some and we tried to mix it up, and he made us pay on a lot of stuff. But saying all that, we should have won that game.”

If it’s any consolation to Nowitzki, the fact that the Mavs came so close to beating the team with the best record in the league and almost scoring back-to-back wins for the first time this season is still an encouraging development.

The Mavs still have a lot of work to do as they fall to a league-worst 3-15 on the season, but after their recent performances, there are some promising signs that they’ve finally started to turn the corner.
