On Thursday, a former Angels teammate of Shohei Ohtani's and Gold Glove winner himself Andrelton Simmons, officially announced his retirement, ending a full decade of stellar defensive play.

His announcement came following November's selection of a crew of 2023 Gold Glove winners that included Anthony Volpe of the New York Yankees and Ha-Seong Kim of the San Diego Padres, among others.

Ex-Angels Shortstop Announces End of Career

Simmons played for the Angels, Braves, and Twins over the course of his eleven-season MLB career, finishing up with the Cubs for a 34-game season in 2022.

The announcement was shared on Twitter Thursday as news officially broke.

Fans and media pundits alike reacted with reverence for the former defensive wizard.

Simmons' MLB Career Snapshot

Simmons was drafted in 2010 out of Western Oklahoma State College.

He won his first Gold Glove in 2013 with the Atlanta Braves, a season during which he hit 17 home runs and knocked in 59 runners while finishing in 14th place in the Most Valuable Player (MVP) voting among all National League contenders.

He was lauded for his contributions both on and off the field by ISE Baseball, a marketing agency that revealed the announcement via its Instagram page on Thursday.

Perhaps most striking is one particular stat for Simmons that no one else has ever accomplished. Simmons retired with 201 Defensive Runs Saved, the highest total for any shortstop in Major League Baseball history.

While he was far from a household name, Simmons will go down as one of the greatest defenders of a generation of Major League Baseball players for his contributions.
