Patrick Sandoval gets the call for the Angels, while Frankie Montas starts for the Athletics.

Patrick Sandoval has a 2.03 ERA. He did not give up a run in the month of April. In his more recent starts in early May, he hasn't dominated, but pitching deep into the sixth inning and allowing only three runs, with this Halo offense, should usually be good enough to win. The big reminder about the Angels this season is that while Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani grab all the headlines for completely understandable reasons, the team's pitching is not cratering. It has held up really well, and that's why Los Angeles is off to such a great start and has put itself in position to make the playoffs, maybe even as the American League West champion in a two-team battle with the Houston Astros. Sandoval has been part of the Halos' resurgence by providing steady, workmanlike pitching for a rotation which was shredded in previous seasons.

Frankie Montas has a 3.77 ERA. He has made four very strong starts and three mediocre starts this season. In the four strong starts, he gave up a total of five runs in 26 2/3 innings. In the three mediocre starts, he gave up 14 runs in 16 1/3 innings. Will we get good Montas or bad Montas? That's a central question to ask when making an Angels Athletics prediction for this game.

Why The Angels Could Cover the Spread

This is a hot baseball team. The Angels rolled past the A's in both games of Saturday's doubleheader. They are getting great pitching to complement their hitting and their feared batting order, which has two legitimate superstars and plenty of help from quality players such as Tyler Wade and Anthony Rendon. All the pieces are coming together for the Halos, who look like a legitimate pennant and World Series contender right now. This is a centerpiece aspect of an Angels Athletics prediction.

Then add the fact that the A's are in dire straits. They won three of four from the Rays in April and briefly looked like a team which could create some intrigue in the American League West, but that did not last long. This team has been shoved around by the Angels and doesn't figure to find a winning answer on Sunday.

Why The Athletics Could Cover the Spread

After getting drilled in Saturday's doubleheader, the A's are going to come to the ballyard on Sunday, reset the dial, and regroup. In baseball, the long 162-game season invites all sorts of occasions in which a hot team finally cools down, even if it doesn't make complete sense. Take, for instance, the example of the red-hot New York Yankees, winners of 17 out of 18 games, getting cooled down by, of all people, Dallas Keuchel of the White Sox on Saturday. Keuchel had been going through a miserable season, while the Yankees were on fire. Yet, Keuchel contained them in a game the White Sox ultimately won. That's baseball.

If you know how baseball works, you know that in an Angels Athletics pick, the surface details shouldn't necessarily be followed.

Final Angels-Athletics Prediction & Pick

The A's could certainly bounce back, but the Angels simply look very tough right now, a problem Oakland cannot solve.

Final Angels-Athletics Prediction & Pick: Angels -1.5
