Former NBA head coach Jeff Van Gundy admits he would be “surprised” if the NBA returns this season.

The league was forced to suspend play after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus. Since then, fans have seen a handful of players in the NBA test positive, including two-time NBA Finals MVP Kevin Durant.

NBA owners would like to resume the season in the summer, but Van Gundy isn't keeping his hopes up:

“I‘m not an expert, but I’d be surprised if the NBA plays again this season,’’ Jeff Van Gundy told Marc Berman of The New York Post. “It’s going to be hard to get it back going. I would suspect it will be very difficult. The good thing is I trust (commissioner) Adam Silver to do what’s right and best and not what is in the best interest of money.

“If it does (go on), that will be great because you know Adam is putting no one unnecessarily in harm’s way. I hope I’m wrong. I hope in June, July it’s safe for our players to go back to work. I hope I’m pleasantly surprised.”

The 2020 Olympics have already been officially postponed. The NBA is going to have to make a decision in the summer.

The CDC is currently recommending no events which have 50 or more people for the next two months. Shortening the end of the 2019-20 regular season so that the 2020 playoffs can be played in full is said to be an option since the league makes most of its money in the postseason.

Before the NBA season got suspended, the Milwaukee Bucks had the top record in the league at 53-12.
