Through a month and a half of the NBA season, rookies have already made their marks with their laudable performances and highlight plays. The newcomers have even impressed NBA legends, including Magic Johnson. As Johnson has kept his eye on the latest batch of neophytes, he took to Twitter to name his top five rookies this season.

The first pick for Johnson is LaMelo Ball of the Charlotte Hornets. Johnson stated that Ball is his leading Rookie of the Year candidate after his brilliant effort in Monday's victory over the Houston Rockets, where he scored 24 points, seven rebounds, and 10 assists, while also tying an NBA rookie record.

Before their win over the Rockets, the 19-year-old Ball was averaging 13.8 points per game along with 5.9 rebounds, and 6.0 assists. With point guard Devonte' Graham sidelined due to a groin injury, Ball has been inserted into the starting lineup and has made the most of his opportunity.

Aside from Ball, Johnson said he's also impressed with rookies James Wiseman of the Golden State Warriors, Immanuel Quickley of the New York Knicks, Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Tyrese Haliburton of the Sacramento Kings.

All of them have made strides with their respective teams, providing quality minutes and averaging double digits in scoring. While Edwards and Wiseman, the top two picks last year, have struggled with consistency, they have truly shown tremendous upside. Haliburton and Quickley, meanwhile, have found key roles despite getting picked lower in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Magic Johnson, picked first overall in the 1979 NBA Draft, lost to Larry Bird for the Rookie of the Year trophy. But he did have an iconic rookie moment when he started at center in Game 6 of the NBA Finals and led the Los Angeles Lakers to the title. So he sure knows a ton about being an impressive newcomer.
