A couple of years into his retirement, rumors began circulating about a potential comeback for two-time NBA champ Ray Allen. The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors were the two teams that were allegedly in the running to sign Allen, who in 2016 was already 40 years of age.

Allen denied these rumors, and even shared what type of adverse effects these had on his personal life:

“Those rumors really turned me off,” former NBA superstar Ray Allen said on a recent appearance on “The Posecast” podcast. “Someone on TV said I already signed a deal with Cleveland. So my house in Miami got broken into for that reason because people thought I was in Cleveland. And I was like ‘I haven't spoken to anybody'.”

This is a perfect example of how unfounded rumors can have a destructive effect on one's life outside basketball. Thankfully, Allen and in his family didn't get hurt in the break-in.

Allen then explained why he never actually came close to making a comeback in 2016:

“I already won a championship, I'm not chasing a championship,” former NBA star Ray Allen said. “So it was just an issue about playing time and money. If you can make both things work, then I would look at it. But other than that, I'm not moving my family out of Miami. And nothing materialized that came close to making those things work.”

At that time, Allen's former Miami Heat teammate LeBron James was already on his NBA redemption stint with the Cavs. A reunion between these two former champs was indeed a very attractive narrative (and so was signing with the Dubs dynasty), but in the end, Allen was happy to stay retired.
