The live-action remake of the Japanese anime classic Cowboy Bebop has been canceled by Netflix after just one season.

There was a lot of hype surrounding Netflix's Cowboy Bebop live-action adaptation. When it was released back on November 19, the show garnered a lot of viewers. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the show has received 74 million viewing hours since its debut, showing strong interest from fans. However, viewership numbers steadily declined over the next couple of weeks. Merely three weeks since its debut, Netflix announced the series' cancellation.

While indeed Netflix cancellations aren't uncommon, Cowboy Bebop‘s three-week lifespan before getting canceled is characteristically quick. The series' four-year development period may have been seen as a costly endeavor by Netlfix, more costly than the benefits the show has provided for the streaming platform.

The show's weak critical reception also didn't help its longevity. Compared to the anime version's 8.9 rating on IMDb, the live-action remake only has a 6.8 rating. The show's ten episodes didn't captivate viewers enough, even if its adaptation was faithful. Perhaps the space cowboy's style isn't completely suitable for live-action, or that the show's use of CG wasn't convincing enough. Either way, we won't be seeing lead John Cho playing Spike anytime soon.
