Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving explained the reason for his odd back-and-forth during his time with the Boston Celtics. Irving initially committed to remaining with Boston, only to backtrack a few weeks later and keeping everything under wraps, which sparked controversy within Bean Town and the rest of the NBA.

As Irving explained in Friday's initial press conference, the death of his grandfather played a role in his change of heart, going from enjoying being part of the Celtics to wanting to part ways.

“They loved me in Boston, I loved the Boston fans… and then two weeks later things got really rocky for me,” said Irving, according to Adam Zagoria of The New York Times. “I went to my grandfather’s memorial on Oct. 23 and it sucked a lot of the joy out for me… so for me I responded in ways that are uncharacteristic.”

Irving looked particularly drained, tired, and at times bothered during interviews. The death of his grandfather would explain why he was sulking during that stretch of time, including the snappy responses to his comments and the entire “ask me July 1” answer he was known for when asked about his free agency plans.

Ultimately the point guard found a home in Brooklyn alongside two friends in Kevin Durant and DeAndre Jordan, who joined him in his quest to form a new team with. The hope for Nets fans is that this season proves to be smooth sailing, as it will all fall into his shoulders with KD on the shelf for the entirety of the 2019-20 season.
