The Dallas Cowboys recently signed pass rusher Aldon Smith, who hasn't played since 2015 due to off-field issues. They also have Randy Gregory on their roster, who has had issues himself.

While those are two extremely talented names, neither is exactly eligible to play just yet.

And there's some bad news on that front for the Cowboys. According to Ed Werder of ESPN, the NFL has yet to decide on either of them.

The reason that's a problem is the NFL Draft. The draft is barely a week away at this point. And this could really change the way they draft.

If Dallas knew that Gregory and Smith would not be available, they could look into pass rushers early in the draft.

At the same time, if they knew one or both of them would be available, they would likely hold off on that position until late.

Now they have a chance to really mess the whole thing up. They could take a pass rusher early, only to find out that Gregory and Smith are available, and they didn't need to.

Or they could not take a pass rusher and have both be ineligible. Then they would run into a pretty serious problem of not having much going on in the pass-rushing game.

With the flaws on the team and the weakness of the NFC East, now is not the time for the Cowboys to make mistakes in the draft. Not knowing who will and won't be available to them for the 2020 season could lead to those mistakes happening, though.

Dallas likely has a plan in place, however. They had to know that this was a possibility when bringing Smith in. So it would stand to reason that they are prepared and have an idea of what they will do moving forward without the knowledge of both Smith and Gregory's eligibility.
