Free agent quarterback Cam Newton took a sly shot at his former team on Wednesday night, taking to Instagram to post pictures of his home workout sessions. The former Carolina Panthers star was released by the team after they signed Teddy Bridgewater to a three-year, $63 million deal.

Newton is heard saying “they gave up on me” on one of his short clips, referring to the Panthers, who cut him loose on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-6 Auburn product is the best free agent available at his position, but he's still adamant to show he's got the work ethic to be an elite-level player again.

“All I know is work. Hard work,” Newton wrote on his Instagram caption.

The former NFL MVP argued that the Panthers “forced me into this.” Carolina cleared the $21.1 million that was scheduled to count against the salary cap in 2020, saving the team $19.1 million in cap space with only $2 million in dead money.

For what it's worth, the Panthers tried to trade Newton prior to releasing him, but couldn't find any suitors to bite on a deal. Teams were unable to have him come in for a physical due to the coronavirus outbreak, making that tougher than usual.

The 30-year-old has had a hard fall from grace in the last few years due to injuries and his performance has been impacted because of it.

Newton was a pristine 15-1 in his MVP year but has gone 23-23 in his last four seasons. Newton missed 14 games last season with a Lisfranc injury as well as the final two games of the 2018 season with a shoulder injury that also required surgery.
