It remains to be seen what kind of atmosphere Super Bowl LV will provide come February, but the halftime show apparently must go on.

Superstar vocalist The Weeknd has been chosen to perform this year's Pepsi Halftime Show, the Canadian-born R&B artist shared.

The Weeknd—whose real name is Abel Tesfaye—released his latest album, “After Hours,” in March. He has over 45 platinum singles and is one of the top recording artists in the world.

Tesfaye and his label, Roc Nation, issued a joint release explaining the excitement of performing at the Super Bowl:

“We all grow up watching the world’s biggest acts playing the Super Bowl and one can only dream of being in that position. I’m humbled, honored and ecstatic to be the center of that infamous stage this year,” The Weeknd said, via Jem Aswad of Variety.

Then again, there is no guaranteeing The Weeknd will actually take the stage at the halftime show on Feb. 7 as scheduled.

The NFL and Roger Goodell have been insistent on doing whatever it takes to hold steady to the league schedule amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

But COVID-19 continues to have a fairly large impact on teams throughout the league, and it is still possible the NFL could institute a 16-team playoff in the event there are further extenuating circumstances.

Regardless, there will surely be buzz about The Weeknd's selection as the halftime artist.

Plenty of scrutiny surrounded the selection of Jennifer Lopez and Shakira last year. However, The Weeknd is more current, and a big hit especially with younger audiences.

In any case, the stage is set for The Weeknd to perform in Tampa.
