Former San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh wants to see Colin Kaepernick get another shot in the NFL.

Harbaugh spoke highly of the former Niners quarterback, adding he has remained in communication with Kaepernick through the years (via Tim Kawakami of The Athletic):

“I love Colin, did then, do now, always will,” Harbaugh said. “I hope he gets a shot. I hope that he has a chance to play again and that he does play. Just my personal view on it. Don’t know all the ramifications, but I keep in touch with both Alex [Smith] and Colin. I’d love to see Colin get another shot at playing, I love watching him play football.”

Colin Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since the 2016 season when he became enveloped in a controversy surrounding his decision to kneel during the national anthem in protest of police brutality and racial injustice.

Harbaugh was the head coach of the Niners when Kaepernick got his first opportunity to start.

Former Niners quarterback Alex Smith led the team to a 6-2-1 record in the team's first nine games, but he suffered a concussion in Week 10 against the St.Louis Rams.

Kaepernick took over under center, going 5-2 over the final seven games of the year and revolutionizing San Francisco's offense with his athleticism and rushing ability in read-option schemes.

The former Nevada product took the Niners all the way to the Super Bowl, where they were narrowly defeated by the Baltimore Ravens. Kaepernick was named the full-time starter shortly thereafter, and he led the Niners back to the NFC Championship in 2013.

However, he struggled to replicate the success he experienced early in his career, going just 11-24 over the course of the next three years.

Kaepernick held a private workout in November, which became a major storyline this past fall. But he has yet to find his way back to the NFL.

Harbaugh hopes his former pupil gets that chance.
