The NFL has had to take unprecedented action in order to prepare for the 2020 season amid the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. As a result, the front office has since taken necessary action to ensure player safety.

According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the NFL will be extending its virtual offseason program through the end of May:

NFL informed teams today that its virtual offseason now will be extended through end of May, per source. Initially, the virtual offseason went through May 15th, now through end of May.

The league finds itself navigating through uncharted waters this offseason due to the pandemic. They were able to successfully overcome one of the major hurdles with a virtual 2020 NFL Draft. Of course, deciding on an appropriate course of action for the looming offseason workouts has proven to be much more difficult.

There are still many teams in states where stay-at-home orders have been extended. This has raised some concern regarding whether or not these restrictions will allow some of them to take advantage while others continue to wait for permission. Fortunately, the recent extension will allow teams some extra time to figure out their situation.

Commissioner Roger Goodell has been adamant about maintaining the timeline of the 2020 campaign. Unfortunately, it remains to be seen if local governments will ultimately allow it to come to fruition. Regardless, the safety of players and coaches will likely remain as a top priority when it comes to deciding on a full-fledged return to action this offseason.
