Former NFL head coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Dungy knows a thing or two about serving as a minority leader in sports. With it recently being reported that the league is considering making some major changes to its NFL Draft format in order to incentivize the hiring of minority coaches and front office executives, it is no surprise that one of the best to ever do it has decided to provide some insight into this seemingly fluid situation.

“In my mind, this is drastic,” Dungy said, via NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk. “I don’t think personally it’s the right thing to do, but I think it should spur some, really, consideration and some communication and conversation and people say, ‘OK, this might not be it, but maybe we can do that [instead].'”

It is worth noting, though, that Tony Dungy does support the piece of the reported proposal that would permit minority coaches to depart from one franchise in order to accept a promotion from another.

“I just have never been in favor of rewarding people for doing the right thing,” Tony Dungy added. “And so I think there’s going to be some unintended consequences. To me it’s almost like the pass interference rule. Yeah, we need to do something. I don’t know if this is exactly it. We need to keep working until we find out what that best thing is to do.”

It remains to be seen as to whether the NFL will officially adapt these changes. Tony Dungy will be watching with the rest of us.
