Los Angeles Lakers ‘senior citizen' Nick Young has been recently drawing surprising praise from fans at Staples Center.

The shooting guard position has been one quite revered during the past 20 years — and now with Kobe Bryant‘s retirement, there's once again some big shoes to fill.

Young was unexpectedly the starter to tip off the regular season and has been backing up Luke Walton‘s decision with solid numbers in four of his last five games.

After posting a 22-7-1-1-1 line in a 119-108 win against the Phoenix Suns on Sunday, fans were eager to give ‘Uncle P' some “MVP” chants at the free-throw line, per Ryan Ward of Lakers Nation.

While he might be far from the actual award, it's surreal to live in a world where he is once again a contributing basketball player.

Young has been for the most part poised in his new role as an elder statesman of the team. His new-found commitment to defense has drawn praise from the coaching staff.

If the Lakers (4-3) have a winning record by the All-Star break, it wouldn't be surprising if Young and D'Angelo Russell make up and become friends again. After all… winning cures just about everything.
