The Denver Nuggets and Jamal Murray agent Mike George have begun contract extension discussions for the rising star guard, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports.

Murray is a third-year NBA veteran at 22 years old from the University of Kentucky. The Canadian-born Murray, at 6-foot-4, can play both guard positions but has primarily played the role of floor general since his sophomore season.

Denver drafted Jamal with the seventh overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft from Coach John Calipari’s flourishing SEC program.

Murray has averaged 14.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game in 238 total games with the Nuggets, shooting 43.4 percent from the field, 36.2 percent from long range, and 87.9 percent from the free throw line. Last season, however, the guard scored 18.2 points per game and dished on 4.8 dimes a contest.

The Nuggets recently made only one selection in the 2019 draft—trading to acquire the draft rights of University of Oregon product center Bol Bol, son of Manute. Bol will likely miss a large chunk of time, like last year’s lottery selection Michael Porter Jr.

For now, Denver is trying to shore up their future by securing young, developing star Murray and signing the Canadian to a long-term deal now.

Denver also exercised their team option on veteran and power forward Paul Millsap.
