It was thought to be a foregone conclusion that star wide receiver Davante Adams would return to the Green Bay Packers if quarterback Aaron Rodgers decided to do so first. Rodgers decided to re-sign with Green Bay and the team then applied the franchise tag on Adams, effectively avoiding a free agency bidding war for his services.

However, things went south when the two parties couldn't agree on a long-term contract extension. Adams was shockingly traded to the Las Vegas Raiders, where he immediately inked a new deal that made him the league's highest-paid receiver — at least before the Tyreek Hill trade.

Monday, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst spoke about the Adams trade and the harsh reality of the situation, per Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

That is a pretty harsh thing for Packers fans to hear. Per Gutekunst, the situation was only ever going to result in a Davante Adams trade.

However, the Packers general manager noted that he felt the conversations between Adams and the organization were “open and honest.” In an ideal world, Adams would have wanted to return to Green Bay no matter what, but it just was not the case. Adams wanted to go to the Raiders to reunite with Derek Carr, even though the Packers made a competitive money offer.

The team then had to make the difficult decision to trade Adams. Packers fans — and Rodgers — will now have to face the harsh reality of life without Davante Adams, arguably the best receiver in the NFL.
