The Green Bay Packers waived safety Josh Jones with a non-football injury ahead of the 2019 NFL season. General manager Brian Gutekunst has since clarified on the reasoning behind his release.

According to Lily Zhao of WFRV, Gutekunst feels Jones' time in Green Bay had simply run its course.

“I don’t think anything went wrong with Josh, I think it might not have been the best fit,” Gutekunst said Tuesday. “Josh is a talented player, we wish him the best. We really tried to make it work here, it just came to a point where it was time. We needed some bodies for this game and Josh hasn’t been able to be out there. It was time.”

The Packers made quite the investment when they took Jones with the 61st overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. His rare blend of size and speed made him an intriguing prospect for this defense and there was speculation that he could potentially take on a hybrid role thanks to his versatile skill set.

Unfortunately, things started to go south For Jones in Green Bay last season. He was not shy about voicing his displeasure with his lack of playing time. Despite all the changes that were made to the coaching staff, he remained an enigma during organized team activities and mandatory minicamp.

It is safe to say that Jones was never able to quite recover after an underwhelming training camp. At a certain point, it appears his presence was starting to do more harm than good. He has since gone unclaimed through the waiver wire and now remains a free agent.
