The Green Bay Packers are set to continue their trend of recent changes going into free agency. However, it appears ESPN feels linebacker Clay Matthews may not be going anywhere.

Matthews will hit the market as a free agent this offseason. According to ESPN's Field Yates, Green Bay will do what they can to re-sign him.

“Colleague Rob Demovsky noted that Matthews might be best suited to work as an inside linebacker for Green Bay, a role he's played previously. Matthews doesn't project to see a robust market for his services if he reaches free agency, and he has been an influential part of the franchise since being drafted 10 years ago. While Green Bay might opt to start fresh in many ways after a stale 2018 and the hiring of head coach Matt LaFleur, a modest money deal might be enough to entice Matthews to stay put.”

Matthews has long been a fixture in Green Bay's defense. While his playing days are far from over, he has already etched out his role as one of the greatest players in franchise history. That could most certainly go a long way in keeping him around.

There is no question that Matthews is coming off an underwhelming 2018 campaign. He finished the season with 43 tackles and a career-low 3.5 sacks. Although his prospects may not be looking too bright in free agency, there is no shortage of teams in the hunt for a solid edge rusher. It would make plenty of sense for Green Bay to sign him to a modest deal to finish out his career as a Packer.
