It's officially official: Matt LaFleur has signed a four-year contract with the Green Bay Packers with a fifth-year option.

Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network broke the news on Twitter, saying that the Packers “got their guy” and that their offer was a “strong one” for a first-time head coach.

Previous candidates for the Packers' head coaching position included Zac Taylor and John Harbaugh, but they ultimately settled on LaFleur for what are, perhaps, obvious reasons.

The Packers fired former head coach Mike McCarthy late last year after the team lost to the Arizona Cardinals. McCarthy served as the Packers' head coach since 2006 and helped the team triumph over the Steelers at Super Bowl XLV. McCarthy was previously the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints.

Matt LaFleur, meanwhile, has had a pretty illustrious career as a coach at both the college and the professional level, even though he never sat in the “head coach” chair until today. He was the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams and Tennessee Titans, and was the quarterback coach for the Washington Redskins and the Atlanta Falcons.

LaFleur was also a football player while he was in college, as well. He was a wide receiver at Western Michigan University from 1998 until 1999. In 1999, he transferred to Saginaw Valley State College, where he served as the quarterback. In 2003, Matt LaFleur began his coaching career in earnest, when he began serving as the offensive graduate assistant at Saginaw Valley State College.
