There has been plenty of speculation regarding the future of Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews. It appears he may not be going anywhere this offseason.

Matthews is set to test the waters of the market in NFL free agency. According to Mike Silver of the NFL Network, the Packers would like to bring him back at the right price:

“They would like to have him back, but it's going to depend on who comes after Clay Matthews and how hard,” Silver said.

The Packers have undergone some substantial changes this offseason and are hoping to fill a number of voids on both sides of the ball. Silver's comments indicate that that Green Bay could be bargaining for a hometown discount. There is a sentimental factor; this is the place where Matthews established himself as a bonafide superstar. However, it remains to be seen whether or not that is in the books for him.

Matthews seemed non-committal about a potential return to Green Bay prior to the end of the 2018 campaign. He indicated that the market will likely dictate where he ends up this offseason. However, his prospects are not looking too bright following an underwhelming 2018 campaign. The veteran registered just 35 tackles and a career-low 2.5 sacks in 11 games this season.

Despite his down season, Matthews is still a serviceable linebacker in this league. Furthermore, his status as a pass-rusher should also help boost his value in free agency. It will be interesting to see if he ultimately stays in Green Bay.
