The San Diego Padres had lofty expectations this season after an extremely busy winter where they stacked their roster. Unfortunately, injuries and inconsistent play followed and the team has decided to fire manager Jayce Tingler because of it. Via Jon Heyman:

It’s no secret the Padres are in an extremely competitive division in the NL West alongside the Giants and Dodgers, but San Diego is a whole 12 games back in the Wild Card race with two days left in the season and trail San Fran by 28 games in the division.

Their pitching staff was absolutely terrorized with health problems in 2021, with the likes of Blake Snell, Yu Darvish, and Chris Paddack all spending time on the IL. Mike Clevinger hasn’t pitched all year, either.

The Padres have currently lost seven straight heading into Saturday’s contest against the Giants. While Fernando Tatis Jr and Manny Machado are bonafide superstars, their offense as a whole has struggled to produce on a nightly basis.

Tingler likely isn’t surprised his firing after San Diego after they went 25-42 in the second half. A change had to be made and hopefully, the next manager can make a difference for this young team that is brimming with talent. He guided the Padres to a 37-23 in the condensed 2020 season and an appearance in the NLDS, losing to the Dodgers.
