Cam Newton loudly proclaimed that he was back after scoring a touchdown on his first play this season with the Carolina Panthers. He then made history scored another on his next play en route to a dominant 34-10 win over the powerhouse Arizona Cardinals (though their starting quarterback, Kyler Murray, was inactive).

While yelling “I'm back!” may seem like a declaration that he's back in Carolina, where he spent the first nine years of his career, Newton actually had a different explanation for it.

After he was cut from the Panthers in March of 2020, Newton spent a season as the starting quarterback of the New England Patriots. The Patriots decided in the offseason that they didn't have a need for him after picking Mac Jones with their first-round draft pick. Newton went unsigned until this week when the Panthers signed him to fill the void left by Sam Darnold's shoulder injury.

Newton's season debut was electric. Although he didn't lead the Panthers to the win — P.J. Walker did the heavy lifting for most of the game — he has every right to be ecstatic with his season debut. Being elated about being back in the NFL is certainly understandable and a terrific sight to see for fans of the Panthers. The team remains in the Wild Card hunt after their dominant victory today.

With Newton back in Carolina, and possibly taking the starting spot next week, things are really looking up for the 2015 MVP and the Panthers.
