The Carolina Panthers' offense was horrid last year. The team never nailed down its quarterback spot and it showed, as the Panthers averaged the lowest yards per play in the NFL this season and tied for the second-most turnovers in the league. Head coach Matt Rhule needed a new offensive coordinator badly.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Panthers have their man: Ben McAdoo.

McAdoo is best known for his two years as the head coach of the New York Giants, where he embarrassingly benched Eli Manning for no good reason and was immediately fired. After leading New York to the playoffs, his team posted two wins in 12 games.

Although he flamed out badly as a head coach, McAdoo helped Manning post one of his best seasons as New York's offensive coordinator, a position he held for two years before being elevated. McAdoo has also spent eight years with the Green Bay Packers coaching both tight ends and quarterbacks. He was on Green Bay's Super Bowl-winning staff in 2010.

The hiring of McAdoo may actually be a decent one for Carolina if his past success as New York's OC is any indicator. However, it won't matter much if Sam Darnold is the team's full-time starter next year. Even if it's Cam Newton, which general manager Scott Fitterer didn't rule out, the Panthers have a lot of work to do on offense.

Carolina needs to invest in a serious quarterback, either via the draft or free agency, in order to turn its offense around.
