Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has had a forgettable start to the 2019 season. His team is without a win, and he has played what can only be described as awful football. To make a bad situation even worse, it appears that Newton will miss Week 3 with a foot injury. Backup Kyle Allen will likely get the nod, per Ian Rapoport of the NFL.

While this may seem like any old “next man up” situation, this one is different. In April, the Panthers selected quarterback Will Grier in the third round. Grier, a former West Virginia Mountaineer, was at one point regarded as a potential first-round pick. He was uninspiring in preseason action, but his presence means that there could be a backup quarterback controversy. Admittedly, that's not the most exciting thing in the world, but it's something.

Presumed starter Kyle Allen also isn't anything to get excited about. He went undrafted before being signed to the Panthers practice squad, cut, and then signed again. His college career was less than spectacular, as he was benched at Texas A&M and at the University of Houston. To his credit, Allen has clearly come a long way since then. He pulled off a win against the New Orleans Saints in Week 17 of the 2018 season while filling in for Newton. While the Saints were playing their backups, it's still notable. Allen will be the starter for now, but he surely has a short leash. Any and every mistake will have fans calling for Will Grier to take the reins.
