New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton hasn't been his best self out on the field in recent weeks.

Despite Newton's struggles under center, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick still backs his starting quarterback and credits him for handling his duties responsibly. This is pretty high praise:

“He works hard. Very professional. Puts in as much time and effort as anybody I’ve ever worked with, any player I’ve ever coached,” Belichick told reporters, via MassLive. “He’s dedicated and conscientious about his job.”

The 2015 NFL MVP has been through a roller-coaster campaign in his first season with the Patriots. After starting the season strong, Newton was derailed by a positive COVID-19 test. He really struggled in his return to the lineup before picking up his performance again in the middle of the season.

In the fast few weeks, though, Newton's passing numbers have fallen off a cliff. While two of the games were wins, his last outing featured a brutal showing in a 24-3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday Night Football. He threw for just 119 yards and an interception while managing only 16 yards on the ground. He hasn't thrown for over 119 yards since a 365-yard performance against the Houston Texans on Nov. 22.

The veteran quarterback and the rest of the team will have to put out stronger performances in their remaining games if they are still hoping for a last-gasp attempt to snag a playoff seat. Hopefully, Bill Belichick's high praise will be enough to motivate Cam Newton and will his Patriots to a win against the Miami Dolphins come Week 15.
