Earlier this week, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels backed out of his agreement with the Indianapolis Colts to become their new head coach. The move sent shockwaves throughout the NFL as many believed McDaniels may have been given assurances from the team that he'd be Bill Belichick's successor in the future.

However, if McDaniels wasn't given any assurances that he'd eventually be the next line for the head coaching job in New England, that's a different story altogether. Former Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis recently chimed in on McDaniels' decision and how it could be a historically bad move, via Ben Volin of the Boston Globe.

“If he’s not [the heir apparent],” Weis said, “then that would’ve been the absolute dumbest move in the history of sports.”

Weis makes a good point as teams around the league may not be willing to offer a head coaching job to McDaniels in the future considering the way he handled the situation with the Colts. The 41-year-old already had an ugly divorce with the Denver Broncos to end his first opportunity as a head coach in the NFL and now teams may simply not trust him or want to work with him in the future.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for McDaniels as he continues as offensive coordinator of the Patriots. New England's future is also up in the air with no telling when Belichick may call it a career or how much time Tom Brady has left playing at a high level in the NFL.

One thing is for the certain, however. McDaniels has bet on the Patriots and may not have an alternative if things go south in the coming years.
