The New England Patriots didn't sign any of the marquee talents on the free agent market, but they're still scouring for playmakers at skill positions. Their latest target is free agent wide receiver Jordan Matthews.

Matthews, who spent three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles before being traded to the Buffalo Bills last year, visited the Patriots on Monday, per ESPN's Field Yates. New England also hosted former Arizona Cardinals tight end Troy Niklas.

In addition to the Pats, Matthews has already visited the Green Bay Packers and Cardinals. After three 800+ yard campaigns with Philadelphia, injuries plagued Matthews' 2017 season, forcing him to miss six games. He ended up finishing the year with just 25 receptions for 282 yards and one touchdown. Given these struggles and health concerns, the price tag for Matthews should be fairly reasonable.

The Eagles moved on from Matthews after bringing on Torrey Smith prior to the 2017 season. Along with Matthews, Philadelphia gave up a 3rd-round pick in exchange for cornerback Ronald Darby. His best season with the Eagles came in 2015 when he caught 85 passes for 997 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.

Through his brief NFL career, Matthews has been criticized for his inconsistent hands, a reputation not helped by the fact that he had surgery on his thumb in October. In addition to that operation, he underwent surgeries on his right ankle and left knee when his season came to a close in December.

Niklas only made 11 catches in 15 appearances (11 starts) in 2017, but his playing time is largely due to his proficiency as a blocker. Both players were selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
