New England Patriots wide receiver Mohamed Sanu will undergo surgery to repair a high-ankle sprain that plagued him throughout the 2019 campaign, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The severity of Sanu's injury probably explains why he was such a disappointment this past year.

Sanu began the season with the Atlanta Falcons, playing in seven games and logging 33 catches for 313 yards and a touchdown. He was then traded to the Patriots at the Week 8 deadline.

In eight games with New England, Sanu's production was very limited, as he tallied just 26 grabs for 207 yards and a score.

The 30-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Rutgers, was originally selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round (83rd pick overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft.

He spent the first four seasons of his career with the Bengals, with his best year coming in 2014 when he caught 56 passes for 790 yards and five scores.

Sanu then linked up with the Falcons in 2016 and had a strong first season in Atlanta, finishing with 59 catches for 653 yards while reaching the end zone four times. He was even better in 2017, hauling in 67 receptions for 703 yards and five touchdowns. And in 2018, he had his best season to date, snaring 66 balls for 838 yards and four scores.

The Patriots' receiving corps was a major issue in 2019, as Julian Edelman represented New England's only reliable pass-catcher aside from running back James White.

The Pats won 12 games and captured their 11th straight AFC East division title, but due to their stunted offense, they fell to the Tennessee Titans in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.
