The 144th staging of The Run for the Roses will not feature the horse named after New England Patriots tight end, Rob Gronkowski. Unfortunately, Gronkowski, the three-year-old colt has been pulled out from the list of Kentucky Derby entries after it reportedly fell ill.

Gronkowski’s withdrawal from the event saddened the Patriots tight end, who took to Twitter to express his disappointment over the horse’s self-exclusion from the race.

It’s unfortunate Gronkowski the horse will not be able to race in the upcoming Kentucky Derby due to an illness. I fully support what is best for the horse. I know he will come back strong and healthy and I am excited to see him race again very soon.

Gronkowski, the horse, has been on a winning streak prior to its owners backing out of the Kentucky Derby. It has won all of its last four races, including last March’s Burradon Stakes in New Castle, Great Britain. In six total races, Gronkowski has only failed to show once, and that was in its maiden race when it finished seventh overall.

There’s still chance for Rob Gronkowski to see Gronkowski race, though, as it is currently listed as probable to run in the third leg of the Triple Crown this June in the Belmont Stakes.
