The New England Patriots this past week made the decision to acquire offensive tackle Trent Brown from the San Francisco 49ers to add much-needed depth at the position. The departures of Nate Solder and Cameron Fleming via free agency left a major void for the Pats.

With that in mind, Brown has quickly voiced his excitement and focus toward competing for a starting job in training camp, according to Karen Guregian of The Boston Herald.

“I’m just going to compete every day and trust that the coaches will put me in the best position possible,” said Brown, who has primarily played on the right side throughout his career.

The 25-year-old spent his first three seasons in the league with the 49ers, where he recorded  28 starts in 31 games at right tackle as a seventh-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. He quickly became a stable force on the offensive line for San Francisco, but a shoulder injury landed him on season-ending injured reserve in mid-December of last year.

Although this move came as a bit of a surprise, Brown has an opportunity in front of him to become a long-term piece of the puzzle for the Patriots. He could be in direct competition for either starting job at both left and right tackle during training camp depending on where the team feels he fits best. 23rd overall pick Isaiah Wynn is projected to start at one of the tackle spots as well.

Brown is heading into the final year of his four-year, $2.3 million rookie deal where he will make $1.9 million. This is also an important campaign in determining the quality of offers he'll receive when he hits the free agent market for the first time in his brief NFL career. Simply put, the 2018 campaign is highly important for Brown for many reasons.
