With Marcus Mariota seemingly on his way out of the Las Vegas Raiders in the offseason, the New England Patriots have suddenly emerged as an interested suitor for the 27-year-old's services.

According to a report posted by The Athletic, the Raiders will be looking to enter the new season with Derek Carr as their starting quarterback, which could open an exit path for Mariota. As it turns out, New England is now looking like a possible destination for the 2015 second overall pick:

Multiple sources, including one GM, told The Athletic the Raiders’ preference is to move Marcus Mariota and keep Carr, unless someone makes them a ridiculous offer for Carr. Mariota has been mentioned as a possibility in New England, with the hope he could become for the Patriots what Ryan Tannehill has been for Mike Vrabel in Tennessee.

The Patriots are in dire need of a new quarterback with recent reports stating that Cam Newton's time in New England has come to an end. The Pats will likely do everything they can to keep All-Pro QB in New England, but in the end, this may already be out of their hands. As such, not having a contingency plan in place would be foolish.

Mariota played just one game for the Raiders last season, and there are more than a few folks that would agree with the notion that his talents are being wasted sitting on coach John Gruden's bench. A change in scenery might work wonders for Mariota, and he could have a clear path to a starting gig with the Pats.
