ESPN analyst Adam Schefter recently had a bold prediction on the next destination of New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton for next season, via Ryan Hannable. As he spoke on The Greg Hill Show, Schefter predicted that the 2015 NFL MVP will play for the Washington Football Team if he does leave the Patriots in the offseason, with a contract potentially in the $40-50 million range.

It would make sense for Washington head coach Ron Rivera to reunite with his former quarterback in Newton during their days together with the Carolina Panthers. At the same time, Washington doesn't have a clear quarterback to have at the helm with Alex Smith poised to enter free agency in the upcoming offseason. Former QB1 Dwayne Haskins was already shown the exit signs before their regular season campaign even ended.

However, the contract mentioned by Schefter would be too steep, considering that Newton only signed a one-year, $1.05 million deal with the Patriots during the offseason. He did bump his year-end salary to a total of $3.71 million due to some of the incentives that were met all throughout the season.

In addition, Newton also failed to make an impressive showing on the field as he already inherited a depleted Patriots lineup when he first came to the team back in July. Based on his performance in the 2020 season, no team would be willing to offer a contract that big to acquire the services of Newton.

After the Patriots concluded their campaign with a 7-9 record, Newton's job also currently hangs in the balance with no certainty of returning to the league for next season. Hopefully, Washington head coach Ron Rivera would be the guy that would give Cam Newton a new lease on his career moving forward.
