The New Orleans Pelicans suffered their worst loss in franchise history on Saturday, losing to the Dallas Mavericks by 46 points. Alvin Gentry's squad has lost eight games in a row.

After the game, Gentry said the Pelicans aren't even competing right now.

Zion Williamson is going to be a good player in the NBA, but not even he can save this Pelicans season. The first year of the post-Anthony Davis era has been a disaster. New Orleans, barring a miracle, won't make the postseason and likely will get another high pick in the 2020 NBA draft.

Williamson underwent surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus in October. He won’t return before the initial six-to-eight week projection of his knee rehab. The meniscus surgery Williamson underwent is unknown, although most experts believe it was a meniscectomy rather than a true repair since the initial estimated timeline was six-to-eight weeks.

In his lone season at Duke, Williamson put on an absolute show. The forward averaged 22.6 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 68.0 percent from the field, 33.8 percent from beyond the arc and 64.0 percent from the free-throw line.

The Pelicans are 6-17 on the season after losing to the Mavs. They are in the 14th spot in the Western Conference standings.
