New Orleans Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry says rookie Zion Williamson is “dying to be back” on the court.

Williamson was expected to miss six to eight weeks for the Pelicans after undergoing knee surgery, but Gentry says there is no return date as of now:

“He’s dying to be back out here,” Gentry said, via Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated. “He’s taking his rehab very, very serious. He’s chomping on the bit. We’d love to have him out there because he is a game-changer. Who wouldn’t want him out there?

“It’s been tough for him only to be able to play in the preseason and not play now. He’s going to be special regardless because he is a team-first guy. And team-first guys seem to succeed in this league and have an impact on their team.”

Williamson underwent surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus. The meniscus surgery Williamson underwent is unknown, although most experts believe it was a meniscectomy rather than a true repair since the initial estimated timeline was six to eight weeks.

Williamson is the new face of the Pelicans in the post-Anthony Davis era. This isn’t how anyone in New Orleans wanted to see Zion’s NBA career begin, but his health is very important and everyone in The Big Easy just wants Williamson to be healthy for the long haul.

The Pelicans are 6-12 on the season, which is 12th place in the Western Conference standings.
