This year’s NBA trade deadline was one of the busiest in recent memory, with several teams making a flurry of deals and many players finding themselves joining different teams. One of those players is veteran shooting guard JJ Redick, who was traded by the New Orleans Pelicans along with Nicolo Melli to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for James Johnson and Wes Iwundu.

However, Redick revealed in his podcast that his departure from New Orleans wasn’t entirely amicable, and called out the team’s front office for its dishonesty regarding his trade request. Speaking on his The Old Man and The Three Podcast, the 36-year-old guard revealed that he made a trade request to the Pelicans back in November, according to ESPN’s Andrew Lopez.

Redick said that he had conversations about a potential trade with Pelicans executive David Griffin and general manager Trajan Langdon. The reason for his trade request was for Redick to be able to see his family more often, as his children would have to quarantine for a week when they got back to Brooklyn just to see him in New Orleans.

According to the veteran guard, Griffin promised him that he would be placed in a preferable situation if he insisted on leaving and that he anticipated that he would get a buyout or trade to a team in the Northeast. However, that was not what happened, as he was traded to the Mavericks, and said that players should not expect honesty from the Pelicans front office.

The former Duke Blue Devil said that he was jarred by the trade, as Dallas wasn’t one of the teams that were discussed in his conversations with the front office. Nevertheless, Redick still thanked several members of the Pelicans organization who gave him a great experience while he was with the team for two seasons.
