New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson is once again making history, but this time it is for something off the court. Williamson and SLAM have engaged in a partnership that involves the player being the subject of an inaugural, cutting-edge NFT collection, per the magazine.

“Through this drop, we hope to deepen our connection with basketball fans,” Williamson commented while creating a unique opportunity for them to get in on the action and own a piece of history.”

An NFT or non-fungible token is a one-of-a-kind, digital commodity. With advances in technology and the emergence of NBA Top Shot, capturing and owning moments or images in sports has in a way become more accessible.

Zion Williamson’s stats have improved in his second year in the league, as he's posting 26.4 points with 7.1 boards and 3.5 assists.

Since video clips of Zion effortlessly soaring through the air as part of the Spartanburg Day High School team went viral, the world had its eyes on him. This included SLAM, which Adam Figman, its Chief Content Officer brought up.

“SLAM has been covering Zion since he was in high school, so it’s an honor to partner with him on this project,” Figman remarked. “Our audience has a strong emotional connection to our many covers and collect them in their physical form, especially the ones with Zion, so turning two of those covers into digital collectibles that fans can own made perfect sense.”

On April 2, the collection will be available on OpenSea, which is the biggest NFT marketplace around. The four versions available are Basic, Gold, Gold Autographed, and a 1-of-1 Platinum Autographed. There will also be a digital basketball available.
