Former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) defender and France international Jean-Pierre Adams has passed away at his home in Nimes after 39 years of being in a coma. He was 73.

For those unaware, Adams went into a coma in 1982 after a botched surgery for his knee injury. As CBS News noted, there was an “anaesthetic error” that led to his condition. His wife Bernadette had been caring for her since then until his saddening passing on Sunday.

PSG learned about Adams' passing and offered a tribute for their former defender, who played for the team from 1977 to 1979.

“His joie de vivre, his charisma and his experience command respect. Paris Saint-Germain offers its condolences to his family and loved ones,” PSG wrote in a statement, per CBS News.

Aside from PSG, Jean-Pierre Adams also played for Ligue 2 club Nimes and Ligue 1 giants Nice early in his career. In fact, it can be said he had the most successful time of his career with the latter, having appeared in almost 145 games and scoring 17 goals for Nice.

OGC Nice, for their part, vowed to pay tribute to Adams on September 19 before they play Monaco at the Allianz Riviera stadium.

“OGC Nice are deeply saddened by the news that Jean-Pierre Adams has passed away, having fallen into a coma on 17 March 1982 (145 appearances for Le Gym between 1973 and 1977). OGC Nice offers its deepest condolences to all the loved ones who watched over him for 39 years,” the team said in a statement on Twitter.

“The club will pay homage to Jean-Pierre Adams ahead of #OGCNASM at the Allianz Riviera on Sunday 19 September.”

On the international level, Adams started playing for the French national team in 1972 and went on to have a total of 22 appearances for Les Bleus.
