Todd Gurley had a stellar season last year, as he helped lead the Los Angeles Rams to the Super Bowl. After a disappointing postseason that included an apparent lingering injury, the Rams looked to bolster their running back group, and could look to take some of the load off of Gurley.

After drafting Memphis running back Darrell Henderson with the 70th overall pick in the third round, many seem to think that the Rams are looking at a possible insurance policy when it comes to their superstar running back.

Speaking to the media after the draft, Rams general manager Les Snead spoke warmly about Henderson, praising his change of pace abilities and noting that the team has been searching for a back like that since Sean McCoy arrived.

According to McVay, Henderson is a player that could force the team to break away from using Gurley almost exclusively in their 11-personnel scheme.

“Being able to give somebody a chance to come in and provide a different threat is exactly what we identified” in Henderson, McVay said via ESPN.

Ever since the Super Bowl loss, the goal for McVay – and the Rams – have been to try and find ways to make things easier for Gurley, so that he’s fresher later in the season.

“We anticipate Todd being a huge part of this like he has been the last couple years,” McVay said. “As far as managing the workload, those are things that we talk about with Todd and as you continue to get educated on, is that something that we should do for the long haul or something that is or isn’t going to affect Todd most importantly and how does that affect our team.”

While there doesn’t seem to be any reason to think that Gurley could be slowing down, the rumors that his knee is showing signs of arthritis aren’t great, and the Rams could have selected a rookie running back in an effort to lighten the load that Gurley had to deal with last year.

Now with Henderson on the roster, the Rams will have the chance to keep track of Gurley and not overwork him.
