Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay is one of the brightest coaches in the NFL, but even the league's best coaches need some assistance.

For McVay, that comes from defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, an elder statesman who has been around the game long enough to know that it's, well, just a game:

“That’s something that has definitely helped me, where I’m always struggling with the balance,” McVay said of Phillips, according to Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com. “Watching the way that he’s been able to sustain such a high level over a course of time; I think you’re seeing why — because he enjoys it, he really has fun with it, and he doesn’t take it too seriously. He’ll never forget that it’s a game.”

McVay has only been a head coach for two years, and already, he has gained a ton of respect around the league, as he has led the Rams to a 24-8 record over that time and is coming off of a Super Bowl appearance.

Phillips is loving what he has seen from McVay thus far:

“I mean, he’s a terrific coach now,” Phillips said. “And he’s a terrific head coach. I think that’s the key thing. He’s not only a really good coach and he’s really smart — he’s a terrific head coach. He’s a great leader that the players follow. And I’m just one of the guys that follow him.”

And Phillips probably knows a great head coach when he sees one. After all, he has been around the league since taking a job as the New Orleans Saints' defensive coordinator all the way back in 1981.
