The Los Angeles Rams made their first big-splash move of the NFL offseason with the agreed upon trade with the Kansas City Chiefs to acquire All-Pro cornerback Marcus Peters. It has brought a significant upgrade to their secondary with the addition of one of the most talented young defensive backs in the league.

Although the Rams are unable to discuss the move until it goes through on March 14, there is a large sense of excitement around the transaction. During an interview of Pro Football Talk Live with Mike Florio, head coach Sean McVay conveyed much of that optimism about what it could bring about.

“You’ve got to be careful what you can talk about because of tampering until that March 14 deadline,” McVay said. “But when you identify a skill set, and Les did a great job of being in good communication with them, and then you have the personnel and coaching staff evaluate it, and you make a decision. Is it conducive for us to take a step in that direction? We felt like that was right.”

Los Angeles is set to acquire one of the game's best cornerbacks that had just finished his third year in the league with some impressive results thus far. He is coming off a highly successful stint with the Chiefs where he earned a pair of Pro Bowl selections and a First-Team All-Pro nod under head coach Andy Reid.

Peters had also racked up 19 interceptions over that span, which is the most in the league and makes him the first player to record at least five interceptions in each of his first three years since former Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed.

What has sweetened the deal is that they were able to work it out for lower asking price than what was expected as the team only parted ways with a 2018 fourth-round pick and a 2019 second-round selection and also got a 2018 sixth-round pick in the deal. On top of that, the Rams are only expected to take on just a $1.74 million cap hit next season while the Chiefs are taking on a $1.3 million cap hit. They also have the choice to pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie deal that is worth $9.5 million by May 3.

There may lie concerns with Peters' behavior on and off the field, Los Angeles is in the position to benefit greatly from adding one of premier defensive backs in the league.
