The Los Angeles Rams hit the road to no avail. Head coach Sean McVay's men came up short against the surging Pittsburgh Steelers. While losing to the Steelers will certainly make headlines by itself, some comments from McVay regarding his decision making under center will also make some headlines as both starting quarterback Jared Goff and his backup, former Jacksonville Jaguars signal caller Blake Bortles, saw action against Pittsburgh.
“We just had Blake come in. That was the play that we had designed for Blake. It wasn’t anything where Jared – you know, he was good. He was OK. That was a play that we were going to get Blake involved in and that was part of the game plan,” McVay said, according to Cameron DaSilva of USA TODAY Sports.
About halfway through the third quarter of the Week 10 tilt in the “Steel City,” Goff was forced to exit the game with what seemed like an apparent injury. Goff could be seen on the field in some pain after taking a big hit from Steelers defensive back Mike Hilton while the Rams starting signal caller then promptly made his way to the sideline. It is also worth noting that this came right before a 3rd down-and-2 from the Los Angeles 28-yard line.
As a result, Bortles came onto the field to replace the seemingly injured Goff while things did not go particularly well. Not only did he appear to be surprised by a shotgun snap that hit him in the chest, but Bortles then attempted to fake a handoff to running back Todd Gurley before rushing for a mere one yard.
It is safe to say that this would be considered to be an odd gameplan…
