The Toronto Raptors have an improbable campaign to defend their NBA title ahead of them. They're close to playing their first game of the season against the New Orleans Pelicans but they are still without their franchise PG in Kyle Lowry.

The NBA champion underwent the knife to fix his thumb in July and is still to return to playing form. He planned to play for Team USA but was unable to suit up due to his injuries.

Raptors head coach Nick Nurse is hoping that Lowry will be able to get to recover for the Raptors sooner rather than later. After all, they need his talents to help them book another slot in the playoffs.

“It’s coming soon,” Nurse said Wednesday, via The Star's Doug Smith. “I think it will be shortly. He has to go to New York City. The operating surgeon has to clear him. But everything is really positive.”

The current Lowry–who until then has rarely missed an NBA game–also puts talks of him extending his contract with Toronto into question. They've never experienced this with their star guard before, but the 33-year-old is serious about his health.

“I’m not where I want to be, that’ll take a long time. It’s a long season when you go that far,” he said, per Sports Net. ” … I’m not where I want to be, physically, mentally … it’s going to be a process, I’m not going to be balls to the wall, I’m gonna slow roll it a little bit …make sure I’m fully ready to go when the time comes.”

The best-case scenario for the Raptors is that Lowry returns in good condition ahead of the season. They cannot force an injured man to rush his recovery.

They should learn that from the way the Golden State Warriors handled Kevin Durant last June.
