As the Tampa Bay Rays try to close in on the American League East crown and the top spot in the AL, they will do so with another bat in the mix.

On Wednesday, it was announced that the Rays will be calling up their top prospect in Josh Lowe. Per ESPN, Lowe has had an incredible year in the minor leagues.

The 6-foot-4 Lowe is enjoying an outstanding season at Triple-A Durham, batting .282 with 21 home runs, 73 RBIs and 24 stolen bases in 98 games.

Lowe has played all three outfield positions this season for Durham, but it is unclear where he will play for the first-place Rays, whose talented and deep outfield already includes Randy Arozarena, Austin Meadows, Kevin Kiermaier, Manuel Margot, Brett Phillips and Jordan Luplow.

It is an already loaded outfield for Tampa Bay and Nelson Cruz holds down the designated hitter spot in the lineup for the Rays. There's always a method to the madness in Tampa Bay though, and calling up Lowe likely means they will carve out some sort of role for him with the playoffs looming.

Tampa Bay is currently 88-51. They are 9.5 games clear of the second-place New York Yankees in the division and they also lead the race for the top spot in the AL by 6.5 games over the Houston Astros.

The Rays came up just short a year ago, losing in the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Their goal this year is clear and it's to get back to the Fall Classic and then win it this time around. Lowe will hope to have a say in the matter.
