Alex Smith has already overcome the odds of his gruesome leg injury by simply returning to the Washington Football Team. But he's continuing to make positive progress as he practices with the team.

As the team took part in an intrasquad scrimmage, Ron Rivera said Smith took another ‘very big step' in his return, per the Washington Post's Nicki Jhabvala.

In the latter portion of the 2018 season, Alex Smith would suffer compound fractures to his tibia and fibula in his debut season with Washington. His 2018 campaign was ended prematurely and his chances to play in the NFL again were looking bleak.

The veteran signal-caller would undergo countless surgeries on his leg and experienced a few infections to his leg. However, after tirelessly fighting his way back, Smith was medically cleared to return to football in July. Then, earlier this month, Smith practiced with Washington for the first time since 2018.

Of course, considering the devastating injury he sustained, Alex Smith is going to need time to get acclimated to playing again. In addition to that, he'll have to gradually gain trust in his legs as he practices.

Provided that, taking part in an 11-on-11 scrimmage is a positive sign in his progress. Even though they weren't going full speed in the scrimmage, it marks the first time he's experienced anything close to game-like action since his unfortunate injury.

Despite Smith's miraculous comeback, Dwyane Haskins figures to begin the season as Washington's No. 1 quarterback. Nonetheless, Smith continues to be an inspiration to many and is heading in the right direction in his recovery process.
